The Relationship Between Man and Environment in Nineteenth-Century Orientalist Photography ----- This paper examines the work of photographers and their approach to photography in the Eastern Mediterranean during the nineteenth century. The critique of Orientalist photography is already well known to the photographic historian, but the representation of man and his environment in photographs offers an excellent opportunity to interpret photographs that are generally labelled Orientalist in a new way. The paper will thus first of all explore the question of how far the Orientalist approach to photography can be considered general for all photographs taken in the region, especially when the human figures in the images are taken into account. The source base for the research is the photo albums from the 1860s to the 1870s in the Historical Photograph and Interview Collection of the National Széchenyi Library, and the photographs they contain. The first half of the article therefore outlines the circumstances in which the images were taken, and then, after having described the typical aspects of Orientalist photography, uses selected photographies to highlight the significance attached to man and his environment through photography during the period.
