Where to Build Barracks in the City? Aspects of the Selection of Barracks’ Sites during the Dualist Era ----- In the second half of the nineteenth century, the newly built barracks and various military installations that housed the mass army of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were ubiquitous in the towns and cities of Hungary. There were several factors in play in determining the location of these barracks within a given settlement during the mass construction of barracks following the billeting reform of 1879. The choice of location was always made by a joint decision of the town (or, depending on the builder, the county) and the military authorities, but it had to comply with the legal requirements. The building guidelines for the 1879 law required barracks to be located above all in accordance with health requirements and in proximity of potential training fields. These were essentially determined by the built environment, but even more by the natural environment. In this study, I demonstrate how the selection of sites for new barracks was determined by both theoretical and practical considerations and the legal framework, and how this was done in practice during the dualist era. The latter will be illustrated by the example of the cavalry and infantry barracks built at Szombathely.
