Absztrakt (kivonat)

“We once thought that Győr was really serious about creating pedestrian spaces...”. Factory Foundations and ‘Green Spaces’ in Győr during the Dualist Era ---- The economic development of Győr during the Dualist era is a relatively well-researched chapter in the city’s history. The settlement of industry and the regu lation of the rivers from the 1880s onwards, supported by the city government, determined the development of the city and its townscape for more than a century. These developments have been generally considered to be positive for contemporaries and ever since. In this study, I set out to nuance this picture and to show that, despite the best efforts of the city authorities, both the river regulations and the factory settlements were criticized. In particular, the lack of urban public parks has been critiqued by contemporaries, who regularly point to the need for green spaces in a rapidly growing and industrializing city. These criticisms are presented above all in the context of the City Park, which was the ‘victim’ of industrial development.
