Workshop and Garden? Forestation Efforts in the Hungarian Capital during the Dualist Era ----- The article explores the problem of how the urban population’s relationship to nature begins to change from the mid-nineteenth century. Using the example of the unifying Hungarian capital, it shows how the demand for greening public spaces emerged, what kinds of new landscaping and afforestation projects were launched in the second half of the nineteenth century, which reasons and motivations led to changes in forest management methods and a more conscious approach to forestry, and how the Budapest city administration tried to adapt to changing social needs. The sanitary and economic arguments in favor of afforestation (cleaning up urban air, calming winds, recreational use of green spaces, and logging) are presented in the contemporary discourse, alongside the related conflicts of interest. In the context of one of the most significant contemporary afforestation programs, the establishment of the border forest around Pest, the article describes these aspects and conflicts of interest in detail, as well as the beginnings of the transformation during which the exploitation of nature intensified, but the need to protect nature and the idea of conserving resources also emerged.
