Environmental Regulation of Medieval Towns: The Examples of Buda and Pest ----- Using topographical data, documentary and other legal-historical sources, the paper aims to interpret the rules that were used to promote urban hygiene in pre-modern Buda and Pest. I will try to answer the question of what kind of environmental regulation, whether indirect or direct, was present in the economic centers of Hungary before the modern times, where the use of natural resources by many actors had to be coordinated in a small area. Ultimately, the question is whether sustainability and reflection on environmental pollution emerged in Hungarian cities before modern public health reforms.
