The Impact of Nineteenth-Century Water Management on Livestock Farming in the Great Hungarian Plain ----- The theory of floodplain management received considerable scientific and public attention around the turn of the millennium, mainly due to negative environmental experiences that made it clear that the water management system in place since the nineteenth century needed some rethinking. Research into the management practices of communities affected by landscape change before river regulation has gained relative momentum, but few studies have attempted to examine them using quantitative tools. In the present study, I examine the livestock farming in the modern Nagykun-District, an area significantly affected by the floods of the Tisza, Berettyó and Körös rivers, primarily to answer the question of how the period of floodplain farming represented a quantifiable extra potential for the sector and how this changed throughout the nineteenth century.
