THE PARLIAMENT OF THE COMPROMISE: PARTIES AND ELECTIONS IN THE 1865–1868 PARLIAMENTARY CYCLE The study examines the political and electoral characteristics of the 1865–1868 session of the Hungarian Parliament. It presents how Hungarian political life was transformed on the boundary between the estate-based system and modern parliamentary conditions, at a time when political parties did not yet exist, but were already beginning to take shape. The statistical analysis highlights that election outcomes were determined primarily by personal authority, prior parliamentary involvement, and local embeddedness. Voter activity displayed both apathy and intense participation: in the absence of parties, political competition was tied more to individuals than to programmes. Based on electoral statistics, the gradual rearrangement of the elite becomes apparent, which after 1867 led to the consolidation of a party system built on the Compromise. The study thus reveals the antecedents of the political structure of Dualism through empirical data and contextual analysis.
