Absztrakt (kivonat)
The Angry Danube and the Serbian Babylon: The 1838 Pest-Buda Flood and its Lessons for the Serbian Public Sphere --- The Pest-Buda flood of 1838 can be described as a crisis that transcended denominational and national divisions. This article seeks to answer the question of how the urban Serbian community, which was small in size but had considerable economic, political, and cultural influence, and the Pest-centered Serbian public, reflected on the disaster. The analyzed reports, fiction and academic writings refer to the relationship between the Danube and the people living on its banks, high lighting the importance of the Danube for trade and transport. The texts under analysis also refer to modernization efforts, urban reconstruction and technological development. In the Serbian press, the lessons of the floods in terms of hydrology are presented in the light of a long and heated engineering debate; the laws of river change and the possibilities for regulating the riverbed. The paper discusses the motives for solidarity after the flood and its representation in fiction.
