Ravening Wolves: Political Crisis and the Perception of the Environment in Fifteenth–Sixteenth-Century French Urban Diaries ---- The paper explores the interconnectedness of environmental and political crises through the stories of wolves in fifteenth–sixteenth-century Parisian urban diaries. The proliferation of man-eating wolves is usually associated with the end of the world, general collapse, and panic. Based on the diaries of an anonymous citizen of Paris in the early fifteenth century and Pierre de l’Estoile of the late sixteenth century, and by exploring the environmental and cultural context of the wolf in the period, I demonstrate that wolf stories can be interpreted in more concrete terms. In my view, the authors who observed, received, filtered, and then wrote down environmental phenomena were in fact using the motif of the predatory, man-eating wolf to shed light on the very specific contemporary political, social and religious phenomena that preoccupied them.
