Absztrakt (kivonat)
Viribus Unitis: Osijek on Its Path to Gaining the Status of a Free and Royal City. Based on a few preserved sources, such as the magistrate’s minutes, the author analyzes the circumstances under which Osijek gained the status of a free and royal city. This process took several decades for multiple reasons. The first reason was that the attempt to unite three chamber municipalities in 1746 was unsuccessful. Although this unification occurred in 1786, it did not lead to a change in the city’s legal status, and Osijek remained under the authority of the Court Chamber. Negotiations with the court in Vienna were prolonged due to various general circumstances, most notably the Napoleonic Wars. The process was finally completed in 1809, when Osijek became a free and royal city. Based on the available sources, the author will provide an overview of the socio-demographic characteristics of the members of the first local authority established in 1809.
