THE RIGHT DIRECTION OF THE SPIT – INTERPRETATIONS OF HONOUR AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY THROUGH AN EXAMPLE FROM VESZPRÉM Endre Ady, in his 1911 article „The Parliament is frolicking”, illustrated the traditionalist characteristics of the Hungarian parliament with an old joke, which he thought was very much alive in his own time: „The magnate spits on the gentleman, the gentleman spits on the bourgeois, the bourgeois on the peasant and the peasant on the dog.” From the joke, the top-down direction of spitting and receiving the spit is clear. It happened, however, a few years earlier, in January 1908, in the town of Veszprém, that Sámuel Doktorits, the former sherff of the Veszprém district, forgetting the correct verticality of the spit, spat on in the chest the parliamentary representative of the Veszprém constituency and one of the most influential people in the countynin front of a large public audience. The news quickly spread, and it didn’t take a week for the national newspapers to report it. The affair, which became a matter of honour and later took on a ‚chivalrous’ tone, eventually involved the town assembly, leading figures in the county administration and judiciary, and other prominent citizens. The aim of my study is to analyse, in detail, the coexisting ideas on the idea of honour, which are unravelled in the Óvári-Doktorits affair. In other words, how, in connection with a specific case, the attitudes of various social groups existing because of the complexity of Hungarian society and their ideas of honourable, honest behaviour are in conflict with each other.
