Opera in prose : Melodramas by Metastasio on Hungarian stage between 1740–1810 ----- Metastasio, the leading figure in the reformation of the 18th-century opera seria genre, drew upon his studies of tragedy in order to make opera look like a drama by giving greater priority to the recitatives at the expense of the arias. This new opera seria, enriched by the logic of a playwright, managed to adapt itself to the needs of the contemporary audience and the conditions of the existing theatres. Thus, it could be presented as a prosaic performance. The aim of this study is to present what the opera seria was like which allowed such a high level of extractions and how the script itself could act as a drama. The musical structure of the Metastasio melodrama can be broken down after removing the arias and the verses of the duets. The remaining dialogues, either in the form of Latin or in the vernacular, were suitable for stage performances which preserved their original meaning and the relationships between the characters. The reception of the plays in contemporary Hungary by the Viennese Poeta Cesario lends validity to the above mentioned statement. In 18th century-Hungary it was only the court theatres which performed the works of Metastasio as operas. However, school theatres and the civic or bourgeois theatres consistently played them as prosaic works. What accounts for this? On the one hand, the expectations of the contemporary theatre, which were inspired by didactic purposes; on the other hand, the lack of the appropriate conditions as well as the amateurish way of acting typical of the theatre-makers. Both theatrical forms saw very intense adaptations into Hungarian. The phenomenon of performing operas in prosaic form was unique because the text could not be separated from the score. What made the drastic adaptiations possible was the application of dramaturgy relying on the strengthened recitatives of Metastasio, since melodrama was not libretto. Metastasio’s works transformed into prosaic plays were as effective on 18th century Hungarian stages as the antique tragedies are in modern theatres, without being accompanied by music.
