Being fully aware of the instrinsic merits of foreign language acquisition as a subconscious process similar to the way children acquire their native language as opposed to foreign language learning as a conscious process, the author also knows that the conditions for subconscious language acquisition are not provided in the classroom context, therefore consciousness-raising is an unavoidable concomitant of foreign language teaching and learning, which does not necessarily mean the explicit teaching of grammar rules. The pre-requisite for consciousness-raising is the teacher’s awareness of the structures and mechanism of the learner’s mother tongue, which is the breeding ground for the so called interlanguage. The basis of consciousness-raising is contrastive analysis controlled by error analysis. The author distinguishes between implicit and explicit consciousness-raising based on the learner’s mother tongue. In both cases, grammar rules are induced – either non-verbally or verbally – from bilingual examples by the learner. The article supplies the reader with copious examples of bilingual equivalents from the morphological and syntactic levels of grammar.
