ON THE INTERPRETABILITY OF TEXTS IN HUNGARIAN HISTORY COURSEBOOKS IN SLOVAKIA Hungarian minority students in Slovakia are often provided course books translated from Slovak, and this is without any exception in the case of history course books. The paper will examine a  history course book of this kind. The numerous translation mistakes are of ignorable importance as compared to the problems brought to the sur face in the pragmatic analysis of the course book. The central problem is that it is written from the Slovak point of view, which, itself is inconsistent, giving rise to unreliable, untrustworthy, hostile, incoherent texts. The analysis investigates what concept of identity may develop among minority students who use this course book and live within a majority society but inherit the Hungarian identity from their family environment.
