AN ANALYSIS OF EXPLAINING IN TEXTBOOKS The accessibility of scientific meaning to learners assumes the translation of the scientific discourse into another type of discourse in the textbook. Explaining can be seen as an attempt to provide understanding of the problems of textbook users. This paper gives an overview of relevant linguistic and pedagogic approaches to the study of explaining. In this frame, the empirical part provides an analysis of the processes of explaining. It is based on evidence of users’ own transformations written in pencil in the printed textbook on the one hand, and on examples taken from Hungarian language textbooks from Slovakia and Hungary on the other. In conclusion, more emphasis is suggested on the planning and translating processes in explaining by textbook writers and evaluators, anticipating the users’ interpretation problems and their needs in the learning contexts.
