György Maróthi’s Musical Spirit on the Pages of the Methodus ----- György Maróthi (1715–1744) was one of the most famous teacher in the history of Reformed College of Debrecen. He studied at four universities in Switzerland and the Netherlands for seven years. In Basel he heard polyphonic choral singing several times. After his peregrination, he decided to teach music reading to the reform community in Debrecen. Therefore, he wrote two summaries of music theory, shortly called Summa and Tanítás (Summary and Teaching). The first Hungarian Protestant curriculum, Methodus was published after Maróthi’s death, in 1770. This regulation is based on Maróthi’s principles and thoughts and contains music teaching methods. This part probably was written by János Csákvári Varjas (1721–1786), who was a student of Maróthi and also was the leader of the school choir for 30 years. This study examines how the writer took into account Maróthi’s thoughts in the music teaching part of the curriculum. The examination covers the logical structure, the contents and didactics of the Methodus and Maróthi’s works. Comparing these writings it can be said that despite being some differences between them, the music teaching part of Methodus basically reflects Maróthi’s ideas.
