In the paper I will present the results of two recent research projects. In the first part I will show an international comparison of the factors that influence the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy. The data source of the work is the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2006 database, published by the Institute for Management Development (IMD), Switzerland. The starting concept of the mathematical-statistical analysis is that the most important composite index of national competitiveness is the GDP per capita. Explanations for changes in the per capita GDP can be shown from two directions. 1. First, we have to study the volume of work by the nations needed to attain their per capita GDP level (i.e. the number of working hours per capita and the influencing factors). 2. Second, we have to examine the value added per working hour in the economies analysed (i.e. the productivity and its influencing factors, first of all the effects of R&D and innovation on the national performance). In the second part I will review the competitiveness of Hungarian regions with the help of statistics from the Eurostat' s Regional Yearbook. I would like to show the regional differences behind the general competitiveness of the Hungarian economy presented by the previous analysis. The main goal of my study is to stress the differences in the working hours per capita and the willingness to innovate. The paper will be finished by conclusions on the regional development plans.
