The Role of Urban Gardens in History ----- The mass emergence of urban gardening can be linked to the social movements of the nineteenth century. Workers’ gardens and small urban gardens were expected to strengthen families and reduce the alienation caused by urban life. Urban gardens, which were created partly through free occupation of land as a result of poverty, crises or wars, are a marked departure from these planned, top-down movements. Given all these historical antecedents, it would seem that the purpose and social background of the community allotments that have proliferated since 1970, mainly on the Western model, are based on a very different foundation. They are, in fact, modern urban spaces of community culture. The productive function is almost completely absent, the size of the gardens is symbolic, and the families active in gardening typically belong to the middle-class and lead an urban lifestyle. In this study, by presenting examples I examine the social-historical patterns of urban small gardens as possible intellectual antecedents of today’s small community gardens.
