Absztrakt (kivonat)

The Rijeka Seascape: Parallels between the Railway and the Urban Panorama ----- The paper presents Paolo Grassi’s 1904 master plan of the city of Rijeka (today Croatia). It argues that the large-scale port developments of the previous decades had severed the city’s connection to the sea. On the other hand, thanks to the railway, a new cityscape was born, the point of departure of which was not the sea but the mountains. Grassi’s panoramic roads sought to make this view accessible to the city. In contrast to the earlier, rational, almost rectangular urban extensions, which mainly concentrated on the relatively flat (or even filled) parts of the city near the sea, Grassi’s vision of the city begins to grow vertically, opening out towards the sea. This also marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the city, replacing the former direct water-urban relationship with a more landscape-oriented approach.
