THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MODERNIZATION OF THE CONTENT OF TEACHING THE MOTHER TONGUE The lecture raises our attention to match the content of mother tongue education to the demand of the today’s world since it is the most important tool of education. International surveys that analysed students’ level of reading comprehension showed that the problems of students who have difficulties in learning are connected to their language efficiency. Therefore it suggests that the structure, the subject-matter, the methodology of the mother tongue as a school subject should be discussed by language experts and should be modified if it is necessary. It presents the grammatical case as an example with which Hungarian students meet only on the foreign language classes. It criticises the misbelief that the acquisition of the Hungarian language is more difficult than that of other European languages. It cites the views of G.B. Shaw on the expressive power of the Hungarian language.
