IT LIES ON THE WAY THERE AND BACK. HIGH-RANKING CLERICAL GUESTS IN EGER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 16TH CENTURY Ippolito I d’Este’s Hungarian account books are an invaluable source for Hungarian medieval studies. The wealth of data contained in the various volumes not only provides insight into the management of contemporary ecclesiastical centers, but also brings everyday life and holidays to life through the associated expenses and purchases. In my study, I examine the group of entries in the Eger account books that recorded the expenses related to the visits of high-ranking prelates to Eger. These data can serve as an important addition to the itinerary of György Szatmári, Bishop of Várad and later Pécs, and later Archbishop of Esztergom. At the same time, they can provide unique data on the reception of important guests passing through the city from the perspective of cultural history at the beginning of the 16th century, and we can form a picture of the representational obligations of the Bishop’s court in Eger and the coordinated work of the governors and provisors.
