MEDIEVAL WORKS IN A BAROQUE COLLECTION. AN ATTEMPT TO RECONSTRUCT THE GOTHIC PICTURE GALLERY OF THE NEUKLOSTER IN WIENER NEUSTADT. The medieval furnishings of Wiener Neustadt’s churches are poorly documented, making it difficult to reconstruct the city’s artistic heritage. The city, once an imperial residence of Emperor Frederick III, saw significant artistic production in the 15th–16th centuries, however, most medieval works were lost or dispersed, with only fragments surviving in various collections. One of the key sources for reconstructing the medieval art of the town seems to be the cistercian (former dominican) “Neukloster”-monastery’s collection, formed during the 18th century. This was due to Bernardus Sommer, an influential figure (as steward) in the monastery’s revitalization. The collection was a real “Kunstkammer”, focusing on natural history, minerals and scientific objects but also containing a painting gallery with mainly Baroque works. However, a number of medieval paintings were also present in this gallery, works with uncertain provenance, already dispersed. The article tries to reconstruct this part of the collection. Stylistic analysis shows, that these objects are all related to the Wiener Neustadt and Viennese region, while historical evidence knows of several medieval objects, out of use and therefore collected from Wiener Neustadt churches and chapels with the aim of saving these for the future. Thus, although the provenience of a number of medieval works still remains elusive, another part of these contributes to Wiener Neustadt’s medieval legacy. A catalogue of the dispersed medieval objects that once belonged to the Neukloster collection is attached.
