THE SHADOW OF THE SUN KING IN SCHOOLS (KING LOUIS XIV OF FRANCE AND HIS ERA IN A HUNGARIAN HISTORY TEXTBOOK) The following paper analyzes the statements about Louis XIV in a contemporary Hungarian elementary school history textbook, and we believe that a more realistic characterization of a historical figure emerges in the details. The title of the textbook, based on the cover, is History 6 – OFI New Generation Textbook. Among the 5 curriculum developers (the authors of the text) are well-known and lesser-known experts in primary and secondary school history teaching, both from the capital and the countryside, older and younger, theoretical and practical, as well elementary as secondary school teachers: Pál Borhegyi, László Kojanitz, Lajos Nagy, Márk Sólyom, Géza Tarnóczi. Although it was published nine years ago and changes have been made since then, in this study we focused on the content of the first edition published in 2017. This is where we found the most information about King Louis XIV of France. First, we examined the educational and developmental objectives. Then we analyzed in detail the text of the lesson on the reign of the Sun King, including definitions, supplementary readings, questions, and exercises. We considered it important to find, identify, and examine the nine illustrations. In addition, we explored how the textbook presents the role of the French king in the history of 17th-century lifestyle and in his support for the Hungarian uprising led by Ferenc Rákóczi. The characterization of the Sun King’s absolutist rule provides an opportunity to analyze autocracy. The presentation of the relationship between King Louis XIV of France and Prince Francis II Rákóczi in elementary school can send a message to young people about Hungary’s foreign policy situation. We also chose this publication because we were surprised to see that the History 6 textbooks published after the 2020 National Core Curriculum (NAT 2020) significantly reduced the amount of information about Louis XIV.
