Absztrakt (kivonat)

THE EDUCATION OF THE DRUGETH BOYS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY The Drugeth family of Homonna was one of the most distinguished families of the Hungarian aristocracy in the early modern period. Although the family was not particularly fortunate from a demographic point of view, as its male members died at a very early age, they held a number of important positions in the 17th century. Three sons were born to György Drugeth of Homonna (IV) and Mária Esterházy, yet they were the last generation of the family. All three boys received the education most characteristic of the era at Jesuit institutions. The eldest, Bálint, had been preparing for a career in the priesthood since childhood, and after studying in Nagyszombat and Vienna, he also attended the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome for a short time. However, his career as a priest was not very successful. Sigismund proved to be much more talented, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Vienna with a dissertation defended under the patronage of the emperor (sub auspicii imperatori). He wrote his dissertation on Hungarian history based on Bonfini’s work. Zsigmond also took part in the Italian Grand Tour, which was extremely fashionable at the time and which only members of the most distinguished families could afford. The youngest son, János, also studied with the Jesuits, but after graduating in Nagyszombat, he did not follow his brothers to Vienna and Rome. The education of the three Drugeth brothers clearly reflects the Hungarian nobility’s adaptation to the increasingly demanding educational requirements of their professions.
