THE PEREGRINATIO OF HUNGARIANS, 1490–1554 The Jagiellonian era may be regarded as the zenith of the peregrinatio academica of Hungarians. The number of university enrolments from this period can be quantitatively assessed: during the Jagiellonian reign, 3,869 enrolments are recorded, while between 1527 and 1557 the figure amounts to 945. These numbers correspond to approximately 3,400–3,500 and 800–850 individuals, respectively. The flourishing of the peregrinatio is further evidenced by the fact that, compared to the medieval average, an increasing number of students pursued studies at multiple universities, particularly in Italy. Although student numbers gradually declined, the real onset of this decrease occurred around 1520/21, a development primarily attributable to the impact of the Reformation. Following the defeat at Mohács and the subsequent Ottoman advance, fewer Hungarians undertook studies abroad. The years 1527–1542 constitute a transitional phase, during which the annual average of enrolments dropped to roughly one-third (34) of the previous period. From the late 1530s onward, the figures began to rise again, though they never approached the levels of the Jagiellonian age. After 1527, the hierarchy of universities also shifted: Kraków lost its leading position, which was temporarily assumed by Vienna, while after 1541/42 the Protestant university of Wittenberg emerged as the principal destination. Significantly fewer students reached Italy during this later period.
