STUDENTS FROM THE CITY OF EGER AT UNIVERSITIES ABROAD AND IN HUNGARY, 1384–1919 In this article, I present the foreign and domestic university visits of the city of Eger, as a bishop’s and then archbishop’s seat, based on the databases that I have compiled together with my colleagues over the past 30 years. In the Middle Ages, we know of 46 enrolments from the city of Eger at European universities, primarily in Vienna and Krakow. After 1526, there was a period between 1596 and 1687, when the city of Eger was under Turkish occupation, and when no one from the city could go to a foreign university. However, in the 18th century, 47 people reached universities, mainly Catholic universities. The data on domestic university visits are naturally larger. Between 1636 and 1850, we know of 756 enrolments from Eger. Of these, 127 were in Jesuit and Piarist educational institutions, and 587 in state and church law and humanities lyceums. Of these, 431 occurred in Eger, where the bishopric, and later the archdiocese, maintained its own law and humanities academy. 81 studied in priestly seminaries and 19 in new colleges that provided specialized knowledge. We are publishing the data on university visits from Eger between 1850 and 1919 as completely new data. From this period, we know of 124 enrolments abroad, mainly at universities in Vienna and Germany. At home, we know of 995 enrolments from Eger at Hungarian universities and colleges, but due to the destruction of sources, this number was presumably higher.
