Absztrakt (kivonat)

DANIEL HAJNÓCZY (1690–1747): A CONNECTING LINK BETWEEN THE ETHNIC GROUPS AND REGIONS OF HUNGARY Daniel Hajnoczy (1690–1747) is, alongside his more famous great-nephew Joseph, the second important member of the family to have made his mark not only on Hungarian history in general, but also on Slovak history in particular. Although he came from a Slovak artisan family that never achieved nobility, he had a remarkable career as a teacher and scholar. However, as a result of adopting the Latinized Hungarian form of his original Slovak surname Hajný, he fell out of the spotlight of Slovak historians. On the other hand, Hungarian historical discourse does not reflect his interesting contribution to the discussion on ethnic and church relations in Hungary in the mid-18th century. Daniel Hajnóczy was educated at several Protestant grammar schools in Hungary and at the University of Wittenberg, and he was programmatically oriented towards a teaching career: he turned down several lucrative invitations to become a preacher and settled permanently in Sopron, where he contributed to raising the standard of the local grammar school. The study focuses on his works preserved in manuscripts, which, in a dialogical form, provided information about various events, natural conditions, and ecclesiastical and cultural issues of the present and the past. His reflections on the ethnic origin of the Hungarian Slavs/Slovaks and their language, which indicate Hajnóczy’s clear ethnic identity, have gone unnoticed. Thanks to this, he can be classified as one of the first representatives of Slovak proto-nationalism and the emerging Hungarus-concept.
