Absztrakt (kivonat)
THE ARMORIAL NOBILITY OF THE SAXONS OF BRAȘOV IN THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD The study examines the emergence and social embeddedness of the Early Modern Saxon armorial nobility of Brașov (Kronstadt, Brassó) by identifying those leading Saxon burghers of the city who obtained letters patent of nobility and by analyzing the extent to which they formed a closed social group. The research is based on sixteenth- to eighteenth-century heraldic, archival, and administrative sources, which make it possible to compile a register of ennobled families. The analysis demonstrates that ennoblements were predominantly linked to urban officeholders—above all town judges, senators, and administrative officials—while military careers played only a secondary role. The study emphasizes the kinship networks and multigenerational strategies of the Brașov elite: certain families were able to preserve their leading positions over several centuries, pointing to the relative closedness of the urban elite and the reproduction of its prestige. The acquisition of noble status did not entail the abandonment of urban identity but rather its elevation in rank. Overall, the case of Brașov shows that armorial nobility functioned as a collective elite strategy fostering social integration and the long-term stability of the urban governing stratum.
