THE LIFE AND EXTRAORDINARY DIARY OF A WORKER. CHAPTERS FROM THE STORY OF JÁNOS DURBÁK At the beginning of the 20th century, a locksmith at the ironworks in Ózd decided to record everything that was happening around him in Ózd and at the factory. Diary writers were usually members of the middle and upper classes, intellectuals; diaries written by peasants or workers were rare. This in itself makes the „event diary” written by János Durbák particularly interesting. The content of a diary is fundamentally determined by the personality, social status, motivations, and intentions of the diarist. The peculiarity of this unusual diary is that it is not primarily about his personal life, but about events that took place in the town and the factory. It often covers everyday events such as the weather, other times events affecting the local community, factory accidents, strikes, and, less frequently, national events and their local impact. Reading the diary entries raises countless questions. Who was the author of the diary? Where did he come from, what was his social background, what was his socialization like? What prompted him to write a diary? Why is this peculiar Durbákstyle „event diary” interesting? What are the characteristics of this unusual diary? I will attempt to answer these questions by reconstructing the life story of János Durbák and his family in the first part of this study, as far as the available s
