Absztrakt (kivonat)
THE UNUSUAL FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN FREDERICK II AND VOLTAIRE After Frederick, heir to the Prussian throne, wrote his first letter of respect in late summer 1736, a regular correspondence began between Voltaire (1694–1778), the uncrowned king of the European Enlightenment, and Frederick II (1740–1786), who also aspired to “philosophical” laurels. During his lifetime, the „philosopher king” sent more than 500 letters to his beloved and hated master. They flattered and complimented each other. Their relationship seemed conflict-free and lasting. In fact, despite the large age difference, their acquaintance turned into friendship, at least for a time. However, when the two infinitely vain, selfish, and ambitious men met several times (between 1740 and 1744), it became clear that they could not stand each other for long. It is therefore no surprise that when Voltaire moved to the court of Frederick II for three years (1750–1753), their cordial friendship turned into hatred and constant hostility. Although they kept in touch by letter even after 1753, their good old relationship was never restored.
