Absztrakt (kivonat)

THE MEANINGS OF A LIVING SPACE: THE PARLIAMENTARY MANSION IN BORDEAUX AND TOULOUSE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY During each of his visits to Bordeaux, Janos Kalmar was fascinated by the historic city, which in the 18th century had taken on the air of a «Little Paris,» as travellers described it. Hence the idea of offering him a tour of Bordeaux, but one that contrasted with Toulouse: the city of stone versus the city of brick, the white city versus the pink city, but in both cases, two cities of parliamentarians. Indeed, the Parliaments of the early modern period profoundly marked the urban landscape and the neighbourhoods where the private mansions were located. By focusing our observation on Bordeaux and Toulouse, we examine two cities with numerous prestigious courts, but two cities with dissimilar activities, as the bustling activity of France’s leading port contrasts sharply with that of a pink city somewhat dormant since prosperity had vanished with the decline of the pastel trade at the end of the 16th century. Didn’t the reputation of Toulouse as an «ugly city» or a «dreary city,» bestowed upon it by several travellers, from Arthur Young to Stendhal, stem precisely from the contrast between the blond stone and the red brick? Didn’t the magistrates of Toulouse, like their counterparts in Rouen, prefer to devote meticulous care to their country estates, while the people of Bordeaux, spurred on by the consumption patterns of merchants, favour facades and ostentation? As Franquières aptly puts it, Bordeaux during its golden age was a veritable construction site, but we will not attempt to recount the entirety of its urban development. Our aim is to compare the most prestigious private housing in the two cities in order to assess and nuance the differences. We will first try to locate and map the residences in space before identifying the signs of social pre-eminence on the facades and exploring the interiors of the homes.
