“TO DECIDE ACCORDING TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF LAW, JUSTICE, EQUITY, AND AUTHENTIC RECORDS” : CHARLES III’S ROLE IN THE CONFLICT BETWEEN BARANYA COUNTY AND BISHOP NESSELRODE OF PÉCS IN THE EARLY 1710S The study examines the jurisdictional conflicts between Bishop Ferenc Nesselrode of Pécs and the County of Baranya during the 1710s, with particular attention to the intervention and decisions of Emperor Charles VI. In the period of transformations following the Rákóczi War of Independence, Nesselrode’s dual position as bishop and lord-lieutenant (Supremus Comes) generated numerous clashes at the boundaries of ecclesiastical and secular authority. The royal decrees were not merely legal instruments: Charles VI. sought to restore the balance between princely and corporate powers, invoking the principles of justice and equity. His interventions aimed to reinforce central governmental authority while formally respecting the traditional rights of the Estates. According to János Kalmár’s interpretation, these cases exemplify how the Habsburg monarchy attempted to reconcile local conflicts through the harmonization of the common good and the royal authority during the early eighteenth-century consolidation.
