A CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION OF THE GOVERNOR IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY The study publishes a short source preserved in the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna, which provides an interesting contribution to the history of the office of the governor in Hungary. According to a memorandum written in 1667 by an unknown author, after the death of the palatine the ruler appointed two persons as temporary governors, who held office until the election of a new palatine. Of the two appointees, one was usually an ecclesiastical figure and the other a secular one. The author substantiates these statements with concrete examples dating from the period between 1645 and 1667.
