THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITIZENSHIP AND LOCAL ELECTORAL RIGHTS IN 1848 In this paper, I primarily focus on how the relationship between the old legal census and civil rights can be examined in the context of the 1848 local elections, as well as what methodological and source-related problems may arise. The significance of this issue lies in the fact that the inhabitants of several market towns exercised their civil rights in the same way as the inhabitants of free royal towns during local elections. This was unfounded in legal terms, but research to date confirms that in several urban settlements, contrary to existing laws, the old legal census was consciously used on the basis of established social practice.
