Absztrakt (kivonat)

THE ITINERARY OF COUNT JÁNOS PÁLFFY, IMPERIAL GENERAL AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IN HUNGARY (NOVEMBER 1710 – JUNE 1711) In addition to the itineraries of rulers and nobles, it is extremely important to process the stays, journeys, and marches of military leaders as completely as possible. There are few examples of this from the early modern period with Hungarian relevance. This work deals with the period of the activities of Count János Pálffy, Imperial Field Marshal, as Commander-in-Chief of Hungary, between November 10, 1710 and June 30, 1711. Pálffy then took on a more political role as a military leader: she managed to end the Rákóczi War of Independence, which had been going on for eight years, with a march and diplomatic negotiations without actual combat, and the peace treaty of Szatmár was the most significant historical achievement of his long and ambitious career. Thorough documentation of the months under study is therefore important not only for its biographical and local historical aspects, but also from a historical perspective. Of the 233 days in question, 99 were documented from Pálffy’s own records, and another 24 from other sources. A large part of the remaining gaps can also be filled with great certainty, mainly from the period of longer stays in Pest, Debrecen and Kassa (Košice). Through a comprehensive review of known sources, his network of connections also emerges. From the Kuruc camp, he was in constant correspondence with General Sándor Károlyi and Prince Ferenc II Rákóczi, and among the imperial generals, Lieutenant General László Ebergényi. He regularly reported to the War Council and its president, Prince Eugene of Savoy, and also informed Joseph I, then the Queen Regent, and Charles III about developments. A good number of his letters to imperial and Hungarian lords have survived, but the Kuruc garrisons (Eger, Sarkad, Munkács) and individual counties and settlements were also often among the recipients. The large camp of individually surrendered Kuruc leaders and their widows also obtained protection and passports from Pálffy, and they expected his patronage for their personal prosperity and the recovery of their positions and estates.
