„EVERYTHING HANGS BY A THREAD” : CASTALDO’S REPORT FROM TRANSYLVANIA, 11 SEPTEMBER 1552 This study examines the military events that unfolded in Transylvania and the Kingdom of Hungary in 1552, with a particular focus on the role and actions of Giovanni Battista Castaldo. Challenging earlier reductive interpretations, the author employs a broader range of sources to present a more nuanced understanding of the situation. Rather than portraying Castaldo as cowardly or inept, the analysis reveals that he found himself in an exceptionally precarious position while attempting to defend Transylvania. The investigation highlights critical issues such as severe logistical constraints within the Habsburg army, chronic wage arrears, widespread discontent among the local populace, and the divergent political agendas of the Transylvanian estates, which were often at odds with Habsburg strategic goals. A memorial dated 11 September 1552 illustrates the desperate conditions confronting Castaldo: financial shortages, scarcity of supplies, declining troop morale, persistent Ottoman threat, and the unreliability of the local elite. The study concludes that the eventual loss of Transylvania cannot be attributed to the failures of individual actors alone, but must instead be understood as the product of the broader, multifaceted political, military, and social crises that characterized the mid-sixteenth century.
