THE FRANCISCAN MONK IPPOLITO DA PERGINE (1643–1715) AND THE ACQUISITION OF THE TITLE OF IMPERIAL PRINCE In December 1687, Palatine Pál Esterházy was granted the title of Imperial Prince by Emperor Leopold I. Several letters from Franciscan monk Ippolito da Pergine have been preserved among his documents. These letters, the text of which we publish together with several other documents compiled by Palatine Pál in order to obtain the title, testify to the fact that the Franciscan, who had considerable influence on the ruler at that time, personally interceded with the emperor and, in accordance with Esterházy’s request, represented the Hungarian aristocrat’s request before the ruler. The palatine’s policy, which supported the dynasty’s right of succession to the Hungarian throne on the one hand and the abolition of the Hungarian nobility’s right of resistance on the other, clearly played a decisive role in the monarch’s ultimately positive decision in favour of Palatine Pál Esterházy. In light of the newly published sources, we can state that Ippolito da Pergine, one of Palatine Pál Esterházy’s most important contacts, who was a member of Leopold I’s immediate circle, repeatedly represented Pál’s request and brought it before the monarch on several occasions between 1684 and 1686, paving the way for Pál’s ambitions at court. The palatine received the title, which was significant for Pál Esterházy mainly for reasons of prestige, at the coronation diet in Pozsony in 1687, meaning that his actual service to the ruling house helped him to obtain the title. At that time, he was only granted the title ad personam, but in a diploma issued by Emperor Charles VI on May 23, 1712, the princely title was extended to Pál’s descendants as well, based on the principle of primogeniture.
