Absztrakt (kivonat)
Merlin Donald wrote ‘Memory Palaces’ in 2001. Just over 20 years later, and with a digital technology explosion on an unprecedented scale into the global, cultural ecosphere, it is a good time for a re-examination of the case that Donald made in his seminal paper and consider its relevance today. Donald had, by 2001, written two books concerned, very broadly, with the evolution of human cognition (Origins of the Modern Mind, 1991) and with the study of human conscious thought (A Mind So Rare, 2001). Both publications contained carefully explicated theses of cognitive evolution and consciousness and are recognised as outstanding contributions to these fields. They also serve as a body of knowledge which Donald also shared in shorter, more focused publications that aimed to illustrate certain specific aspects of his theses, one such being the essay in spotlight here: Memory Palaces: The Revolutionary Function of Libraries. By tracing the logical progression of Donald’s essay, I attempt to show that Memory Palaces can be used as a basis for further exploration of some of the most crucial, epistemological concerns for our times: the role of culture and technology in our society today and what we may be able to do about it through a realignment with our modern libraries.
