The Religious and Ethnic Composition of Market Towns in Zemplén in the 18th-19th Centuries. During the 18th and 19th centuries, several significant political, social, and demographic processes took place that shaped the religious and ethnic landscape of the entire country. This development was also evident in the market towns of Zemplén. The religious and ethnic composition of the population was influenced by several factors: the ongoing, gradual process of re-Catholicization in the 18th century, the resettlement of depopulated areas after the expulsion of the Ottomans and the devastating plague epidemic, the growth of internal migration toward towns, and the massive migration and settlement of Galician Jews in these market towns. These processes were particularly pronounced in urban environments and on the country’s periphery, conditions met by the towns of Zemplén. This study examines and compares the religious and ethnic data of three market towns in Zemplén: Homonna, Gálszécs, and Nagymihály.
