Absztrakt (kivonat)
Schizophrenia is a chronic, often debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder associated with considerable morbidity. Recent molecular biological studies support the fact that it is a polygenic disease. Its positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, suspiciousness and conceptual disorganization) are associated with hyperdopaminergic neurotransmission in the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, while negative symptoms (social and emotional withdrawal, blunted affect) and cognitive deficits may be caused by hypodopaminergic activity in the mesocortical pathway. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the population, a well-known neuropsychiatric disorder although the accuracy of the general knowledge is very questionable. In a questionnaire we investigated how much people know about the disorder and what level would they integrate schizophrenic patients into the society. People with accurate knowledge about schizophrenia either were medics or knew well a person with this disorder. These people were cautious with the social integrability of schizophrenic people, although they could imagine their employment in jobs under constant control and with small responsibility. Others with less accurate knowledge about the disorder were against the integration of schizophrenic people, they were afraid of them, and associated them with uncontrollable aggressive behavior and dissociated personality. The media should help to form a more tolerant attitude towards people with neuropsychiatric disorders by providing more balanced information about these people.
