SÁMUEL TESSEDIK’S ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE The study examines Sámuel Tessedik’s (1742–1820) environmental outlook—particularly his views related to water—through an environmental-historical lens, drawing primarily on his own writings. In light of the long-term impacts of nineteenth-century river regulation, it remains a timely question which landscape-use concepts informed early water-management initiatives and where intentions diverged from implementation. The text outlines key stages in Tessedik’s career that can be linked to his environmental thinking and briefly presents the eighteenth-century hydrological setting of Szarvas, which provided him with his most substantial practical experience. Tessedik regarded the resources of the Great Hungarian Plain, despite its favourable natural conditions, as largely underutilised and considered the advancement of agrotechnical knowledge essential. He deemed water management desirable not only for the drainage of surplus waters but also for the development of irrigation, hydropower, and inland navigation. He attached particular importance to the presence of water in the landscape and to the role of lower-lying areas in enhancing resilience to drought. While his views can, at the level of principles, be reconciled with theories of floodplain management, he did not identify or adopt good practices associated with floodplains in the farming strategies of the local peasantry.
