Absztrakt (kivonat)
THE MEMORY OF THE BATTLE OF CHAERONEA IN AESCHINES’ SPEECH AGAINST CTESIPHON Aeschines’ well-known and crushing defeat in the Crown Trial (330 BC) makes it difficult to read his speech Against Ctesiphon—which in fact attacks Demosthenes, whom Ctesiphon had proposed to crown—as a genuinely persuasive prosecution composed in the hope of victory. Yet the orator was probably confident of success, and there is an aspect of his argument that has perhaps received insufficient scholarly attention: the narrative he constructs of the immediate causes and consequences of the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BC). For the judges of the trial, the presentation of this recent event may well have been crucial. Accordingly, Aeschines sought to portray his opponent as the sole architect of the catastrophe, responsible for every misfortune of the current political situation. The force of his accusation was strengthened by the Athenians’ traditional propensity to seek scapegoats after tragic reversals of fortune. Yet Aeschines may have miscalculated the politics of memory, which, ultimately, weakened the overall impact of his case.
