Absztrakt (kivonat)

The wooden churches of the Carpathian region are situated within a culturally cohesive and clearly defined area. Although they span a broad historical period—from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century— and exhibit diverse stylistic features, their construction techniques and architectural forms share many similarities. From a global comparative perspective, the coherence of the region and the stylistic unity of these structures would justify their inclusion in a single serial World Heritage nomination. The countries in which these churches are located participate in various forms of regional cooperation, many of which include cultural dimensions. It would therefore not be surprising—or unprecedented—for them to collaborate on a joint nomination. In practice, however, despite both formal and informal pressure from ICOMOS and the availability of European Union funding, the state parties ultimately submitted separate nominations, resulting in the region’s wooden churches being divided across four distinct World Heritage sites. This outcome highlights a broader structural problem: while there are clear professional arguments in favor of a universalist approach, the resources needed for nomination and management are typically allocated at the national level. As a result, even where cooperation exists, it tends to operate within multilateral frameworks shaped primarily by national interests.
