Cultural Mediation and Its “Recipients”: A Survey of Linguistic, Literacy, Occupational, and Confessional Structures in Northeastern Hungary at the End of the Dualist Era ----- This study analyzes the religious and social structures of two counties in Northeastern Hungary—Heves and Borsod—during the period preceding the First World War. Particular attention is given to the role of churches as agents of cultural mediation, especially through the school system and the spread of literacy. Denominational affiliation had a significant impact on educational attainment, livelihoods, and social positions. Roman Catholics were underrepresented in the industrial and commercial sectors, whereas Jews and Lutherans were disproportionately present in positions requiring higher qualifications. Protestant denominations were primarily active in the agrarian sector. Religious and linguistic homogeneity, as well as varying levels of literacy, shaped the reach and societal embeddedness of churches within their communities. The study serves as a preliminary survey for an upcoming interconfessional research project.
