Puritanism and the Cultural Transformation of Northeastern Hungary in the 16th and 17th Centuries. This study explores the cultural transformation of Northeastern Hungary in light of the impact of the Reformation and, more specifically, its puritan strand. The Reformation itself brought significant changes to the region, as synods mandated the employment of schoolmasters, teachers, and rectors alongside pastors in every settlement. In the 17th century, a group of individuals—returning from studies at English and Dutch universities—arrived in the region and sought to introduce puritan ideals. Evidence from the market towns of the region reveals that puritan preachers, such as János Tolnai Dali, aimed not only to reform and revive religious life after the decline of late 16th-century Reformed orthodoxy, but also to reshape school curricula and reframe attitudes toward education and communal life. Sporadic sources suggest the emergence of a civic mindset, including calls for the education of women. These developments contributed fundamentally to the transformation of urban life in the region.
