Environmental History and Migration: Emigrants from the Austro–Hungarian Monarchy to Brazil ---- The study aims to examine the historical context of migration from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Brazil from the perspective of environmental history. The work analyzes the circumstances of emigration, travel and settlement of Austro-Hungarian citizens to Brazil, then shifts the focus to Brazil and explores the phen omenon, already understood as immigration, in the context of the colonization of the South American landscape and nature. The research examines the ‘push and pull’ factors experienced by emigrants in their home countries, sometimes involving negative environmental conditions and the social and economic effects of contemporary artificial landscape transformations, industrialization, urbanization, and infrastructural development. The work interprets migration as an interaction between environment and society, which for the people concerned was associated with a sense of environmental change and unprecedented environmental experiences. The research seeks answers to the reasons for integration and disintegration into the ecologically complex Brazilian environment, which differs in terms of climate, humans?, flora, and fauna from Austria–Hungary. It explores the reasons for the laws passed in the Austro–Hungarian Empire in the late nine teenth and early twentieth centuries to prevent emigration to Brazil.
