From the Zagyva-Dominated Water World to River Regulation in the Jászberény Region ---- The Zagyva River, in the days before its regulation, supplied water year after year to a marshland of about 64 km², which was located in the flat area surrounding the city of Jászberény. The long-delayed regulation of the Zagyva water system was forced by the series of floods between 1937 and 1941. After the regulation, the so-called Nagy-ér, or Kongó-ér became the main Zagyva riverbed that flows outside the town as a sort of bypass ring and then merges with the Tarna river. From this point on, the so-called “Urban” river stretch of the Zagyva, that runs through the town center, could only receive a limited amount of water. The extent of the marshy areas around the town had shrunk considerably by this time. The reduced intensity of the works was given a new impetus by the great ice flood of 1963. Between 1963 and 1966, the embankments along the Great Lake were built and considerably raised, and the “Urban” Zagyva River was completely cut off from flood drainage. The water management project completed in 1966 created the actual hydrological situation in the Jászberény area.
