Nagyléta in a Changing Landscape: Economic and Social Impacts of Nineteenth-Century Anthropogenic Landscape Transformation in the North Bihar Region ----- In the second half of the nineteenth century, the landscape of the Great Hungarian Plain changed as a result of the river regulation and the draining of marshes in the Tisza river basin, i.e. the anthropogenic landscape transformation. The extensive meadows and pastures were largely replaced by arable land. With the reduction of surface water, areas which once had complex biodiversity have become more vul nerable to climatic anomalies. A structural change in the Great Hungarian Plain’s economy also took place simultaneously, with a shift from large-scale livestock farming to crop production. The transformation of the landscape also affected the village of Nagyléta on the eastern edge of the Great Hungarian Plain and its wider surroundings, the North Bihar region. In my study, I demonstrate how changes in land use at the local level have been affected by the anthropogenic transformation of the landscape and how all this impacted local society.
