Absztrakt (kivonat)

The trial of Gertrudis : The power struggle of Gertrudis’ monologue (Act IV) ----- The classical drama, Bánk bán should be interpreted in new aspects thus we should decide the main points. A fruitful approach is to focus on female characters in order to move away, dislocate them from their stereotyped roles. In my previous papers (Melinda könnyei / Melinda’s tears and A magyar Lucretia / The Hungarian Lucretia), I tried to remove Melinda from her position of the unexperienced innocent; I tried to reveal what and how happened to her, with all the physical and mental consequences of the rape she had to suffer. I am determined to free the queen, Gertrudis, from the stigma of the ’evil (foreign!) lady’. It is a rather risky experiment as most experts (from János Arany, Pál Gyulai, János Horváth, to Pál Pándi) considered Gertrudis as not only the enemy of Hungary but the immoral procuress who passed Melinda (the Palatine’s wife!) over to her brother, the lecherous Otto – thus Gertrudis knew about Otto’s intentions. I have a different opinion: there is no textual evidence that Gertrudis knew Otto’s plans (prior to I/13, according to the first edition); what is more, when she realized Otto’s plan she was definitely against it. In that sense, my paper is a retrial concerning Gertrudis’ guilt. The key to her character is her monologue (IV/3.) of her views on power(!). She identifies power with dictation and legislature assuming an exceptional position for the legislator, above the Law.  This view is against the constitutional notion represented by the King himself in the drama (Act V). All the grievances listed by Petur (Act II), Tiborc (Act III), Mikhál and Bánk (Act V) can be deduced from Gertrudis’s notion of power. Within the legal system of the drama, Gertrudis’s views on power leading to a tragic outcome are erroneous. But she is innocent in the guilt she is murdered for (in the crucial minute, Bánk calls her a procuress) – thus, we see the tragic fate of Bánk. Bánk bán is the tragedy of misunderstanding, its textual atmosphere is a semantic obscurity where every figure is walled into his/her own linguistic world with a limited possibility of observation. Multilingualism  which is the main feature of the drama becomes the source of the tragedy. (See my papers Gertrudis színre lép / Gertrudis enters and A rejtekajtó / The hidden door.)
