Absztrakt (kivonat)

Since 1832 the codification of the Hungarian orthography is regulated by the Linguistic Committee of the Academy of Sciences. While the lexicology and – in some respect – the grammatical forms of spoken language change continuously, spelling rules are modified only every 30-40 years. After a decade’s work, the new edition of the Hungarian orthography is about to be published. The paper gives a detailed survey on the preparation carried out by the Committee, enumerates the main principles  of the changes, and compares some rules found in the previous and the new edition. Both our society and everyday life are characterised by the dominance of the written forms, that is why today it is impossible to introduce a spelling reform. This is the most important feature of the new Academic orthography.
